Cinema Memorial: Unusual & Meaningful places to Hold a Memorial

When we think of a memorial, we often picture a chapel or a funeral home.
But more and more families are choosing to say goodbye in ways that reflect who their person truly was — their passions, their loves, and the things that lit them up.

Recently, I had the privilege of leading a memorial in one of the most unique and fitting venues I’ve ever seen: a cinema in Rosebud.

It wasn’t just any cinema memorial — it was a heartfelt tribute to someone whose lifelong passion was movies and cinematography. Guests were greeted with popcorn on arrival, surrounded by the silver screen and plush red seats.

There was even a lolly bar at intermission — a sweet and playful nod to their love of classic cinema nights. Guests helped themselves to old-school favourites: snakes, milk bottles, freckles, and choc tops. It brought smiles and a wave of shared memories for guests who gathered to remember their father, uncle, friend and work colleague.

The service itself featured film clips, personal photos, and stories projected on the big screen. There was no traditional structure, no rigid order of service. The family wanted an atmosphere, connection, and a space that felt truly them — and that’s exactly what they created.

It was a powerful reminder that memorials don’t need to follow a script.
They can happen anywhere — in a backyard, on a beach, at a community hall, in a garden, a gallery, a surf club… or yes, even in a cinema.

What matters most is that the space feels right. That it tells a story.
That it captures something of the person whose life we’re honouring.

So here’s a thought: What space feels like you?

A memorial can — and should — be as unique as the life it celebrates.
And sometimes, the most unexpected places are the ones that feel the most right.
